Comments:
Thanks to Bill Lloyd and Colin Baldwin from the Southport CC for
assisting with the Finish timekeeping and “holding-up” respectively. Thanks to
Paul Olson (Merseyside Wheelers) for acting as Start Timekeeper. Thanks also go
to other members of the Merseyside Wheelers who came out and assisted at this
event.
Congratulations to Michael Ashurst for winning once again and to 2nd
placed Phil Williams who improved on his last year’s time. The fastest female was once again Louise Hogg
who improved on her time. Quite a few of those who rode last year also rode
this year, many of whom have shown improvements so congratulations to them and
thanks to all who rode this year.

Weather Conditions:
Cool, Sunny and Dry, with a slight wind.
John Clarke (Chairman)
Merseyside Wheelers Road Race Pimbo Circuit Sunday 23rd March 2014.
Distance: 81km/ 24 laps.
The race started on time at 10am with the weather conditions being a chilly cold wind but sunny and dry.
There were 67 starters and 16 DNS’s.
For the first 6 laps there were attempts by individual riders to ride off the front of the peloton until on the 7th lap a small group of 5 riders rode off the front but the next time around although there was still a small group trying to get away it consisted of different riders.
On the 10th lap a group of 9 riders had got away and the 10th lap 10 riders were leading the race with a time gap of 22 seconds. Just behind this breakaway group were another two riders who were trying to make contact with this group.
From this point on the leading group were working well together even though the time gap to the remainder of the field remained static. The remaining riders did not look to be working cohesively and the time gap slowly grew from a 43 second gap on lap 14 to 1min 6 seconds by lap 18.
Although there were sporadic attempts by individual riders to ride off the front of the peloton they all came to nothing and by lap 22 the gap to the breakaway group had grown to a significant 1min 40 seconds.
All that remained was to see if anyone was going to attempt to ride away from the breakaway group to prevent a possible bunch sprint finish.
This did not happen but on the final lap the breakaway group started to split up as they appeared at the start of the finishing straight with riders attempting to ride off the front.
As they raced up the finishing straight Steven Fidler of the Dave Hinde Racing Team rode away from his breakaway companions to win by a clear couple of bike lengths.
The rest of the breakaway group sprinted in across the line behind him.
It was an exciting race and a good finish which should have made easier work for the race judges. J S Clarke

Merseyside Wheelers Road Race Official Result
Sunday 24th March 2013 Pimbo, 65km
Olympic Development Programme junior Matt Gibson (Velocity WD40) came home alone to record his first win of the season in the 65-km Merseyside Wheelers road race on the Pimbo circuit.
The Lymm-based rider, who was scheduled to compete in the weather-hit Cadence round of the National Junior Series, dominated the race in a break with Sam Jackson and his own team-mate Andy Leigh before going clear in the closing stages to finish 19 seconds clear. Frank Pilkington (Bill Nickson Cycles) led in the rest some three minutes down on Gibson to take fourth place

Comments: Thank you to everybody who turned up to ride and support this Hill Climb. It was an excellent turnout and hopefully introduced the”Joys”!! of riding hill climbs to those who have not ridden one before.
Many thanks to Bill Lloyd and Colin Baldwin from the Southport CC who rode out and assisted with the running of this event and thanks go to the many members of my club, the Merseyside Wheelers, who despite having no riders to support came out in their numbers to act as officials and supporters, and without whom this event could not have been run. Congratulations to the fastest riders who have shown how fast this climb can be ridden.
John Clarke. (Merseyside Wheelers)

Comments:
Despite the change in the weather we had a very good turnout of riders for this event. The roads were damp from the overnight rain and the drizzle falling during the event. Fortunately there were no incidents.
Congratulations to everyone who rode as the numbers made it well worthwhile our club promoting this event.
I hope that those new to this side of cycle racing “enjoyed” it
Participating for the first time, the Southport CC, provided many of the extra riders this year and we thank Bill Lloyd of the Southport for stepping in and being “holder-upper”!!
I would also like to thank my club mates Paul Olson and Kit Carson for being “true” bikies by riding out to the event and officiating as timekeepers. Club Members Sandra and George Corfe stood in the Prince William car Park collecting our race numbers just in case someone rode off home with it still pinned to their jersey!!
My wife Lil kindly braved the damp and wet conditions to act as Signing-On steward, collecting the CTT race levies.
Finally the Club would like to thank the Proprietors of the Prince William for allowing us to use their Car Park.
John Clarke.

First
of all, well done to all of the above riders for coming out and “braving”
the elements as well as completing the climb.
I
have been asked to mention a couple of the riders who said that they were coming
out but who did not turn up – Harry, Rob and a few others, the ladies put you
to shame!!
It
was “quite wet”!! - Which is an understatement, as it was a nonstop deluge
of rain throughout the event and indeed the whole morning. Lil & I are only
just now getting ourselves someway warm and I have spread everything out in the
back garden to try and get it dry before it gets stored away.
Despite
the awful conditions there were many good rides done with the winner’s time
being we think, a record for our event.
Thanks
to everyone who turned up, not least the members of my club, the Merseyside
Wheelers. These were Kit Carson and Jimmy Hassan who did the top of the climb
timing and signing-on respectively, Barry Warriner and Jean Pierce who were
“holder-upper” and rain jacket “keeper” at the start and Lil and John
Clarke who were starting steward and Start Timekeeper respectively.
At
least with the above riders turning up to ride, it gave us some reason to be out
in the weather, even though the motorists passing might have suggested that we
needed our heads examining!!
